Palms

An exotic garden cannot exist without palm trees. The easiest one is Trachycarpus fortunei. It thrives in relatively cool summers, but needs some protection during extreme frosts with hessian or straw. Good draining soil is important. A good Trachy has stiff leaves, there are however many inferior plants in the trade. Trachycarpus princeps with blueish leaves is a must-have, but less hardy than T. fortunei. The hardiest feather leaved palm is Jubaea chilensis, in zone 8 climates and lower this beauty needs shelter from cold weather in winter; it can survive -12°C for a short period. Some hardy Butia's like B. eriospatha and B. capitata can be grown succesfully in mild climates (zone 8b and higher).

This slow growing fan palm has beautiful blue leaves. An adult plant will endure short periods of frost if it is kept completely dry in winter. Protect with a party tent or something similar! In summer after hot weather give this beauty a lot of water and fertilise every few weeks.

Butia capitata

This palm will tolerate -12oC for limited amount of time. Needs very good winter protection. May be grown with care outside. If damaged at the growth point it may die ! The best thing is to protect it with electrical thawing wire or christmas lights. In the mild winter of 2000/2001 the B. capitata in our garden lost it's growth point, but in august new growth appeared! Our wet conditions damaged it badly, though. The next winter was fatal. Grows rather fast.

This beauty from altitudes around 1000 m in Southern Brazil is expected to like our cool, humid climate. Differs from B. capitata by it's green leaves and woolly base of the petiole. Growth is rather fast and extends well into autumn.Eexperience with this newcomer shows it's hardiness turns out to be unsufficient. With some artificial heating in winter it will be my first choice palmtree! It appears to tolerate -12oC for short periods. Needs very good winter protection. May be grown with much care outside. On a protected spot under evergreen plants like bamboo this is a charming little palm for the garden. However, more than 8 degrees of frost might be lethal. Frost-protection may be necessary! Bright, direct sunshine may damage the leaves. Graceful feather palm!

A South American palm with pinnate leaves, will withstand heavy frost if big enough. Plant as a seedling, which produces a big root system. Very slow growing palm! Drainage should be perfect! Choose a spot against a South facing wall. Develops a huge grey trunk after many years. Likes moderate heat, however survives in a colder climate as well. Old imported plants (15-18 yrs) to order from about 200 euro's up. Needs fungicide-treatment with a broad spectrum fungicide before and after each winter to prevent rot of the spear. Edible seeds.

Fast growing popular palm, that tolerates -8°C as a big palm. May be grown with care outside. Sometimes is damaged at the growth point and can then die off. The best thing is to protect it with electrical thawing wire or Xmaslights. Only grow outside with winterprotection and extra heating.

Hardiest palm of all; may survive extreme frost with some protection. A warm site is essential with abundant water and manure during summer. The needles are dangerous for children and animals playing! Growth is very slow.

The only palm that grows well in our climate and tolerates our winters very well. It's nearly always sufficient to simply loosely pack it (particularly the growth point) in the winter. Different forms may be found in the trade. I prefer the so called 'Nanking'-variety with flat and tight leaves. This palm should be planted in every exotic garden! Prices are average and subject to plantquality and containersize.

Recently discovered high in the Naga Hills, India. This palm is only moderately hardy, the rather large, stiff leaves are similiar to those of Tr. princeps. Maybe something very special - maybe not ... only seedlings available. Interesting palm for people who enjoy experimenting with new species.

Recently discovered Trachycarpus palm with bluish leaves, less hardy than T. fortunei. Rare Palm Seeds has sold princeps-seeds in 2003-2004 of yet another Trachy, probably related to Tr. martianus. These fast growing seedlings are named Tr. princeps 'RPS-form' or 'sp. Nova'; they have green leaves - not bluish.Max 3m
