Bamboo

Whilst bamboo can be seen as the backbone of an exotic garden, it can also be used elsewhere for a fast-growing hedge or groundcover. In Holland the tallest bamboos can become 8 to 10 (12) metres tall and between 6 to 8 (10) centimeters thick - see our 'news page' for the latest records - whereas the smallest only grows to 20 cm. Most species only become a few metres tall. There are edible bamboos and ones which produce good wood, green and variegated ones, but also black, green or yellow plants. There are those with rapidly spreading roots which have to be kept in check; others (like Borinda, Chusquea and Fargesia) stay more or less in one place. The minimum temperatures indicated here indicate the lowest temperature at which the bamboo still remains more or less evergreen. Usually the bamboos are not killed by lower temperatures; they will regrow in spring! Our plants are home-grown, and NOT PROPAGATED IN A LABORATORY (not propagated through tissue-culture).

With some artificial heating in winter it will be my first choice palmtree! It appears to tolerate -12oC for short periods. Needs very good winter protection. May be grown with much care outside. Camellia hybride Debbie

Moderate leaf loss
Camellia hybride Debbie
  • Solitary
  • Hardy to -15 °C
This is a very popular camlellia; it can be found all over the place. Large, deep pink peony-shaped flowers which bloom from early to late spring. Loose, upright growth, also suited to training, even against a north wall! My impression is that this camellia is less hardy than the -18oC which it is supposed to tolerate. Here in the nursery the plant gave up at -14oC ... bud hardiness is rather poor.Max 3m

Helen’s Hybrid may be a cross between Musa sikkimensis Red Tiger and Musa Chinichampa. Seedlings from this happy marriage are not uniform. Some resemble their father, some resemble their mother. Most plants are intermediate like the one pictured. With maximum winter protection this might be an interesting addition to the assortment of garden banana's. small quantities sometimes available, all from seed and not from tissue culture (= not from a laboratory). I cannot guarantee it's winter hardyness, probably next year.

(syn. Musa sp. Tibet) One of the best-growing garden banana's - a 'must' for an exotic garden! Probably a form of Musa yunnanensis? I don't think so. So far no flowering record known. Introduced recently as Musa "Sp. Tibet" and "sp. Yunnan", but that seems to me not true. The real yunnanense is slender, smaller and has much more powdery pseudostems It seems less hardy than Musa basjoo. A less vigorous plant. Was under observation in my garden, but appeared to be not hardy enough here in the 2017/2018 winter. No longer available. Still alive in 2020. A giant form of this Musa is now (2020) under observation.

Highest bamboo in Europe (25m) but unfortunately not suited to our climate; P. kwangsiensis was a fine alternative for large gardens but began to flower in 2010. Needs even more fertiliser and water than other bamboos. After 10 years this plant is still 1.50 m tall in my garden. A hardy clone called 'Bokrijk' did not grow well. Other clones from the Bambouseraie (Anduze) and from Japan are under observation. Phyllostachys requires plenty of water and manure during the growing season.

Trachycarpus fortunei

Chusan windmill palm

Moderate leaf loss
Trachycarpus fortunei
  • Solitary
  • Hardy to -15 °C
The only palm that grows well in our climate and tolerates our winters very well. It's nearly always sufficient to simply loosely pack it (particularly the growth point) in the winter. Different forms may be found in the trade. I prefer the so called 'Nanking'-variety with flat and tight leaves. This palm should be planted in every exotic garden! Prices are average and subject to plantquality and containersize.

Recently discovered Trachycarpus palm with bluish leaves, less hardy than T. fortunei. Due to little hardiness no longer available. Larger plants are illegally collected in the wild and therefore not offered here. Rare Palm Seeds has sold princeps-seeds in 2003-2004 of yet another Trachy, probably related to Tr. martianus. These seedlings are named Tr. princeps 'RPS-form' or 'sp. Nova'; they have green leaves - not bluish.Max 3m

This very vigorous clumping bamboo spreads rapidly like a running bamboo. It has performed well in containers, full shade and full sun. Its vertical culms arch near the tops, and masses of leaves forming at each node create a layered plume- like effect. In the 90ties we had occasionally frost-damage, but nowadays it seems fully hardy.
