Dankzij het voortreffelijke standaardwerk over varens "De complete gids voor tuinvarens" van Martin Rickard weten we nu tenminste van het bestáán af van een enorm uitgebreid assortiment varens. Al deze varens bemachtigen is bepaald niet makkelijk. Het in Nederland en België gekweekte gangbare assortiment is ten slotte maar magertjes. Er moet nog veel uitgezocht worden, maar één ding is zeker: "De Groene Prins" zal af en toe met nieuwe varens komen! Vooral wintergroene varens natuurlijk, al zijn enkele niet-wintergroene soorten toch essentieel voor de exotische tuin zoals b.v. Osmunda. Enkele veelbelovende nieuwigheden zijn: Woodwardia unigemmata, die beter winterhard blijkt te zijn dan W. radicans; Blechnum chilense, die zich al vele jaren handhaaft in de tuin en Arachniodes simplicior waarvoor hetzelfde geldt. De boomvarens zijn geweldig als ze in een vorstvrije kas kunnen overwinteren, maar in de volle grond blijft het een uitdaging.
