Banana

Banana plants can grow and even flower in your garden, but frost protection with straw, leaves and rough compost is essential for good growth. Especially in summer they need plenty of water and manure. Hardy bananas won't give you edible fruit, but they are impressive ornamental giants for your garden. They need shelter from wind! Recent new introductions are now under observation like the awesome "Chinichampa" and a giant form of Musa yunnanense.

Musa basjoo

Currently the best-growing garden banana - a 'must' for an exotic garden! Fruits are not edible. Cover abundantly with straw or conifer leaves in winter. Use bubble-plastic foil as final "hat". Essential for exotic gardens. Apply in summer lots of manure and water. Without winter protection the plant may freeze back but usually recovers completely with new shoots from the roots in late spring aftere severe frosts.

Musa Helens Hybrid

Moderate leaf loss
Musa Helens Hybrid
  • Tub plant
  • Solitary
  • Mediterranean
  • Hardy to ? °C
Helen’s Hybrid may be a cross between Musa sikkimensis Red Tiger and Musa Chinichampa. Seedlings from this happy marriage are not uniform. Some resemble their father, some resemble their mother. Most plants are intermediate like the one pictured. With maximum winter protection this might be an interesting addition to the assortment of garden banana's. small quantities sometimes available, all from seed and not from tissue culture (= not from a laboratory). I cannot guarantee it's winter hardyness, probably next year.

(syn. Musa sp. Tibet) One of the best-growing garden banana's - a 'must' for an exotic garden! Probably a form of Musa yunnanensis? I don't think so. So far no flowering record known. Cover abundantly with straw or conifer leaves in winter. Use bubble-plastic sheet as final "hat". Essential for exotic gardens. Apply in summer lots of manure and water. Without winter protection the plant may freeze back but usually recovers completely with new shoots in late spring after severe frosts.

Musa yunnanense

Deciduous
Musa yunnanense
  • Tub plant
  • Solitary
  • Mediterranean
  • Hardy to -10 °C
Introduced recently as Musa "Sp. Tibet" and "sp. Yunnan", but that seems to me not true. The real yunnanense is slender, smaller and has much more powdery pseudostems It seems less hardy than Musa basjoo. A less vigorous plant. Was under observation in my garden, but appeared to be not hardy enough here in the 2017/2018 winter. No longer available. Still alive in 2020. A giant form of this Musa is now (2020) under observation.
